Nieves Fernández, Medalla Internacional de las Artes 2020 de la Comunidad de Madrid

Nieves Fernández ha sido galardonada con la Medalla Internacional de las Artes 2020 de la Comunidad de Madrid, por su trayectoria de toda una vida dedicada al arte, junto a Elvira González, Helga de Alvear, Juana de Aizpuru y Soledad Lorenzo.

Estamos muy orgullosos por este importante reconocimiento al trabajo y dedicación incansables. Y nos honramos en tratar de dar continuidad al enorme legado en defensa del arte y de los artistas.

Nieves Fernández inaugura en 1977 en Murcia la Galería Yerba, que sigue hoy su trayectoria bajo el nombre de NF/ NIEVES FERNÁNDEZ en Madrid.

La galería comienza su andadura como un centro de debate político y cultural que expone a los actores de la plástica contemporánea tanto española como extranjera, realizando al mismo tiempo una labor editorial con colecciones como Hojas de Yerba o Arquilectura. Desde entonces, ha trabajado con grandes maestros como Eduardo Chillida, Antoni Tàpies, Jannis Kounellis o Arnulf Rainer, dentro y fuera de España.

De la misma forma, realiza exposiciones en diversas sedes institucionales de Murcia, como la exposición homenaje a Joan Miró, organizada paralelamente en la Galería Yerba y en la sede del Colegio de Aparejadores y Arquitectos Técnicos, con conferencias de Simón Marchán Fiz y Valeriano Bozal.

En 1983, comienza a colaborar con el Banco Exterior de España, en el comisariado y organización de las muestras: Pintado en México, con Octavio Paz como autor del texto del catálogo, Homenaje a Sempere (1983), Pintado en Colombia (1984), inaugurada por Gabriel García Márquez, y Homenaje a Luis Fernández, primera antológica en España del artista, que posteriormente será uno de los pilares de la Colección Telefónica.

En 1984 organiza la IV edición del Premio Cáceres de Pintura y Escultura y, de forma paralela, en Yerba expone a artistas como Pablo Picasso, Allen Jones, Antoni Tàpies, Eduardo Chillida, Equipo Crónica, entre tantos otros.

En 1988 se presenta la Colección Telefónica, cuya selección había realizado Nieves Fernández con obras de los artistas Luis Fernández, Juan Gris, Eduardo Chillida y Antoni Tàpies. La colección tenía como ejes fundamentales la vocación social y la intención de recuperar el patrimonio nacional. Hoy constituye una parte importante de los fondos del Museo Nacional Reina Sofia de dichos artistas.

En 1989, la galería se separa de la librería y bajo el nombre de Nieves Fernández se traslada a Madrid, donde continúa su labor.

Desde 2017, Nieves Fernández forma parte del consejo internacional Asesor de la Hispanic Society de Nueva York.

Nieves Fernández has been awarded with the 2020 International Medal of the Arts of the Community of Madrid, for her lifelong career dedicated to art, along with Elvira González, Helga de Alvear, Juana de Aizpuru and Soledad Lorenzo.

Nieves Fernández inaugurated Galería Yerba in Murcia in 1977, continuing its trajectory today under the name of NF/ NIEVES FERNÁNDEZ in Madrid.

The gallery begins its journey as a center for political and cultural debate that exposes actors from both Spanish and foreign contemporary art, while simultaneously carrying out editorial work with book collections such as Hojas de Yerba or Arquilectura. Since then, she has worked with great masters such as Eduardo Chillida, Antoni Tàpies, Jannis Kounellis or Arnulf Rainer, nationally and internationally.

In the same way, she organized several exhibitions at various institutional venues in Murcia, such as the exhibition tribute to Joan Miró, organized in parallel at Galería Yerba and at the headquarters of the Colegio de Aparejadores y Arquitectos Técnicos, with lectures by Simón Marchán Fiz and Valeriano Bozal.

In 1983, she began to collaborate with the Banco Exterior de España, in curating and organizing the exhibitions: ‘Pintado en México’, with Octavio Paz as author of the catalog text, ‘Homenaje a Sempere’ (1983), ‘Pintado en Colombia’ (1984), inaugurated by Gabriel García Márquez, and ‘Homenaje a Luis Fernández’, the artist’s first anthology in Spain, which will later be one of the pillars of the Telefónica Collection.

In 1984 she organized the IV edition of the Cáceres Prize for Painting and Sculpture and, in parallel, at Yerba she exhibited artists such as Pablo Picasso, Allen Jones, Antoni Tàpies, Eduardo Chillida, Equipo Crónica, among many others.

In 1988 the Telefónica Collection was presented, whose selection was made by Nieves Fernández with works by the artists Luis Fernández, Juan Gris, Eduardo Chillida and Antoni Tàpies. The collection was fundamentally organized around its social vocation and its intention to recover the national heritage. Today it constitutes an important part of the funds at the Reina Sofia National Museum for these artists.

In 1989, the gallery separated from the bookstore and, under the name Nieves Fernández, moved to Madrid, where it continued its work.

Since 2017, Nieves Fernández has been a member of the International Advisory Council of the Hispanic Society of New York.
